Greene King

Founded in 1799 by Mr Greene and Mr King, Greene King operates over 3,000 pubs and restaurants across the UK. As the estate grew the brewery neglected its own brand, resulting in a very fragmented brand.

Many green kings were created but none had the necessary credibility for a company with such pedigree and heritage.

Positioning the brand around ‘Authentic Hospitality’ we went in search of the one true king who genuinely resonated with the story of Greene King.

We found St Edmund. His royal crest of a crown crossed by two arrows can be found in and around Bury St Edmunds – Greene King's birthplace and current home.

Created as a mark of quality, the crest now sits proudly across the entire Greene King estate.

“We want our brand to act as a badge of quality, to stand for several things: that in every interaction with Greene King, a stakeholder will get a warm, sociable welcome; they’ll receive a quality product; they’ll deal with down-to-earth people. The identity reflects the heritage and values of Greene King. Everything about it oozes quality and authenticity.”

How we crowned the true King and united the UK’s largest brewery

Greene King
Bury St Edmunds has always been and continues to be the home of Greene King. This historic town takes its name from St Edmund the martyr, the only king of England to be confirmed as a saint. We chose his distinctive crest of a crown crossed by two arrows for Greene King as an authentic symbol of its provenance.
We crafted St Edmund Sans,
cut specifically for use in
signage, print and web
applications. Inspired by
humanist style but with
a sharp character and
weight all of its own.
“The identity reflects the
heritage and values of
Greene King. Everything
about it oozes quality
and authenticity.”
